How Often Should I Change the Filters in My Dehumidifiers?

A dehumidifier’s purpose is to remove moisture from the air.  This is especially useful if you’re trying to stop the growth of mold and dust mites.  Dehumidifiers are well-suited for parts of the house where humidity is present, like damp basements.  They work by drawing air over cold coils, condensing out its moisture, before passing the air over warm coils and back into the room as dry, breathable air.

As dehumidifiers suck out moisture, they can pull in all sorts of dirt, from bacteria and mildew to microscopic debris and mold. This means your dehumidifier can become *gross* pretty quickly, with the air filters in the device bearing the brunt of the dirt.  So, how often should you change the filter in your dehumidifier?

According to airpurelife.com, most durable dehumidifiers use filters that can last for at least three months before a replacement is required.  It’s important to ensure your dehumidifiers are not running on dirty, clogged filters.  As a rule of thumb, always check the filter every month to determine if it needs to be thrown out and a new one installed in its place.

Changing a filter is also dependent on the nature of the environment and how frequently the dehumidifier is used.  For very dusty environments where the dehumidifier is constantly running, the filter should be changed more often than usual.  While the filters used in less humid regions could be changed once every 6 to 12 months.
