What are tarps made of?

Tarps, short for tarpaulins, are large sheets of strong, flexible, water-resistant, or waterproof material, often cloth such as canvas or polyester coated with polyurethane, or made of plastics such as polyethylene.  Tarps have way too many uses to list, but here are some of the most popular ways to utilize tarps:

  • Shelters/Tents

  • Keeping things dry

  • Protection for items being transported in flatbed or open trucks

  • Weed deterrent

  • Dragging heavy items

  • Covering damaged areas

  • Keeping things clean

  • Protection against extreme weather conditions

Traditional tarps are often made of polyester, canvas, nylon, polyethylene, and polypropylene.  Tarps made mostly of polyethylene are more durable, stronger, and have a more waterproof ability as compared to other types of material like canvas.  Nylon ground covers and polyethylene mesh tarps are more lightweight and allow shade from the sun while still being breathable.

The type of tarp that you decide to purchase depends on what you plan to use it for.  Long-term outdoor use?  Try vinyl-laminated polyester tarps.  Breathability, hauling gravel, or sunlight protection for plants?  Mesh tarps are your best bet.  Floor and carpet protection during painting, or transporting materials like asphalt?  Try canvas tarps.
